WELCOME TO A JOURNEY WHERE HOPE STILL LIVES IN EVERY HEART AND A NEW DAWN AWAITS. FOR OVER 30 YEARS, DVAS HAS IGNITED THE LIGHT OF BELIEF, GENTLY HOLDING FRAGILE DREAMS AND TURNING SMALL STEPS INTO NEW PATHS AND IDENTITIES. WITH POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR AND INNER PEACE, PEOPLE FIND THE STRENGTH TO LIVE THEIR DREAMS WHERE CHANGE IS NOT JUST SEEN, BUT DEEPLY FELT, FULLY LIVED, AND CARRIED FORWARD.

"The journey to change the world begins with one's own suffering - and the courage to rise beyond it."

Born in a small settlement of Fatuha, Bihar, Dharmendra Kumar's early life was shaped by exclusion that defined everyday reality. As a child, he was made to sit separately in school, while many families around him hesitated to send their children for education due to fear and social barriers. Opportunity was not determined by ability, but by circumstances beyond control. Yet, these experiences did not break him - they shaped his purpose. He began to see education as a pathway to dignity, confidence, and a better future, not just for himself, but for entire communities who had long remained unheard and unseen. In 1992, this purpose took shape as Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) - a collective effort born from lived pain and a deep commitment to bring lasting change. What started with small steps - connecting children to education, supporting families, and creating safe spaces for women and adolescents - gradually grew into a wider movement of community-led transformation. Over the years, villages once held back by silence began to move forward with confidence. Children entered schools, young girls continued their education, and communities started participating in shaping their own future. Today, this journey has reached millions across Bihar, where people are no longer standing on the margins, but progressing with dignity, confidence, and new possibilities. Dharmendra Kumar's journey reflects a powerful truth - when personal experience connects with collective strength, transformation becomes real and lasting. From exclusion to empowerment - transforming lived pain into collective progress, where every step forward carries dignity, confidence, and hope. From exclusion to empowerment - transforming lived pain into collective progress with dignity and equality.

To support marginalized communities in overcoming deep-rooted inequalities, achieving economic independence, and living with dignity as equal participants in mainstream society.

Our Values

Empathy

We listen deeply to the lived experiences of Scheduled Caste and weaker sections, grounding our work in compassion, respect, and solidarity. Our empathy goes beyond understanding - it inspires meaningful action, shaping responses that honor dignity, nurture confidence, and strengthen collective spirit.

We center the voices of the most marginalized within Scheduled Caste and weaker sections, ensuring participation across gender, age, ability, and identity. Our commitment to inclusivity creates spaces and leadership that are accessible, representative, and deeply respectful.

Integrity

We uphold honesty, transparency, and accountability in all that we do. Our integrity is reflected in our unwavering commitment to truth, dignity, and ethical action, ensuring that every step we take remains aligned with the trust and aspirations of the communities we serve.

Our Strategy

At Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS), our strategy is grounded in a clear and unwavering commitment: to enable marginalized communities to lead their own journey towards dignity, equity, and sustainable development. We work with those who are often excluded - Dalits, women, adolescent girls, transgender individuals, and vulnerable children - ensuring they are not just beneficiaries, but active participants and decision-makers in the change process.

Our approach focuses on strengthening community-led institutions and grassroots leadership, so that change is owned, sustained, and scaled from within. We integrate interventions across education, sustainable livelihoods, mental health, and gender equality, recognizing that true development is holistic and deeply interconnected.

We emphasize capacity building, awareness of rights, and access to entitlements, enabling communities to engage confidently with systems and claim what they are entitled to. By working closely with Panchayati Raj Institutions and local governance structures, we bridge the gap between policy and practice, ensuring that public systems become more accessible, accountable, and responsive to the needs of the most marginalized.

Our strategy is also informed by continuous learning, documentation, and evidence-building from the ground, which strengthens our advocacy for inclusive policies and systemic change. We collaborate with civil society and stakeholders to create an enabling environment where equity and justice are not aspirations, but realities.

For us, impact is not defined by numbers alone, but by the transformation of lives, confidence, and opportunities.

Your support will help strengthen community leadership, expand access to critical services, and ensure that no one is left behind in the development process.
Theory of Change

Theory of Change

Rooted in the journey of Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) in Bihar, this work reflects a quiet yet powerful transformation - reaching communities where Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other marginalized groups, especially women, adolescents, and gender-diverse individuals, continue to seek dignity, identity, and equal opportunities.

DVAS believes that true change begins when people at the margins are recognized as leaders of their own stories. With this belief, we nurture young people and adolescent girls - strengthening education, mental well-being, livelihoods, and confidence - so they can shape not only their own futures, but also the future of their communities.

As individuals grow, they come together to form strong, connected communities - spaces of trust, shared voice, and collective strength. Alongside this, DVAS works to make systems more responsive and inclusive, so that opportunities and essential services reach every individual with respect and care.

When confident individuals, united communities, and supportive systems align, change becomes deep, lasting, and meaningful. Today, this journey is about building a generation that lives with self-belief, dignity, and purpose.

Your support is not just contributing to a program - it is becoming part of a shared vision where every individual feels seen, valued, and empowered to move forward.

Because when the most unheard voice finds its strength, a more just and compassionate society begins to take shape.
