The journey to change the world begins with one’s own suffering—and the courage to rise beyond it.”

Mr. Dharmendra Kumar: A Resolve from Disdain to Self-Respect
Born in a small hamlet of Patna, Dharmendra Kumar’s childhood was spent in those lanes where a person's identity was defined not by their ability, but by their caste. On the threshold of school, along with education, he received the insult of 'sitting separately.' That pain, that loneliness, and those closed doors could have broken his young mind, but he turned the fire of that insult into a torch. Today, that same boy is the voice of respect for thousands of underprivileged people. This story is not just of one individual, but of unwavering self-respect born out of struggle.
Yet, these experiences did not break him—they shaped his purpose. He began to see education as a pathway to dignity, confidence, and a better future, not just for himself, but for entire communities who had long remained unheard and unseen.
In 1992, this purpose took shape as Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS)—a collective effort born from lived pain and a deep commitment to bring lasting change. What started with small steps—connecting children to education, supporting families, and creating safe spaces for women and adolescents—gradually grew into a wider movement of community-led transformation.
Over the years, villages once held back by silence began to move forward with confidence. Children entered schools, young girls continued their education, and communities started participating in shaping their own future. Today, this journey has reached millions across Bihar, where people are no longer standing on the margins, but progressing with dignity, confidence, and new possibilities.
Dharmendra Kumar’s journey reflects a powerful truth—when personal experience connects with collective strength, transformation becomes real and lasting.
