Where hunger and fear once halted life, hope found a way to move it forward.
Ruby Devi, a resident of Kazhiyapur slum in Patna, once lived a life defined by uncertainty, displacement, and daily survival. Each day brought a new struggle—fear of eviction, lack of stable income, and the constant worry of how to feed her children. Life was fragile, and dignity felt out of reach.
Then came the COVID-19 pandemic—
and everything collapsed.
Her small source of income disappeared overnight. The kitchen went empty. Days passed without proper meals. Her children looked to her with hope, but she had no answers.
👉 This was not just poverty—it was a moment of complete helplessness.
At this critical juncture, Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) stepped in as a lifeline. The organization provided two months of dry ration, hygiene kits, and ₹25,000 in livelihood support. But beyond relief, they restored something far more powerful—hope and self-belief.
With this support, Ruby took her first step toward rebuilding her life.
She started a small fast-food and egg stall. What began as survival gradually turned into stability, generating a daily income of ₹1000–₹1500 and bringing food back to her family’s table.
But the journey did not stop there.
With continuous support from DVAS, Ruby was:
- Registered as a street vendor and linked to government schemes
- Trained in driving skills along with 20 other women and adolescents
- Supported with an E-Rickshaw through the Living My Promise initiative
👉 This was the turning point—when Ruby realized she could now steer her own life forward.
Today, Ruby Devi confidently drives her E-Rickshaw across the city, earning ₹1500–₹2000 daily. In the evenings, she continues to run her food stall, strengthening her household income.
She has also been trained in digital literacy, enabling her to accept digital payments and manage her finances with confidence.
👉 This transformation is not just economic—it is the rebirth of dignity, confidence, and identity.
Today, Ruby Devi is more than a survivor—
she is a self-reliant entrepreneur, a community leader, and a role model for other marginalized women.
Her journey has sparked a ripple effect. Inspired by her success, over 100 women in her community have stepped forward to pursue skill training and sustainable livelihoods.
👉 When one woman rises, she lifts an entire community with her.
